SCHROON LAKE, N.Y. PHOTOGRAPHY LOCATION

AND THE LODGE AT SCHROON LAKE

We traveled here and provided extensive information on photographing Schroon Lake in the Adirondacks. This is a good location for photography, but it’s a great place to go with or without a camera. This article is based on our personal experiences exploring the location, offering authentic insights and accuracy that you may not find in many AI-generated articles. These are the details discovered by an international award-winning travel photographer—and this is what we found.

Article is not AI generated. We traveled here showing Pamela Goodyer and her camera.

They call this Schroon Lake. But a name is too small a vessel for the grace that unfolded here. The Earth held its breath. The wind stilled its endless travel. The water laid down its ripples and became a perfect, breathless mirror and allowed the Universe to speak in color.

And in that sacred silence, the universe did not whisper—it bloomed. It painted the sky in hues for which we have no name. We did not seek this moment. The moment waited for us— Because we were the only ones quiet enough to hear it arrive and because it found us worthy of its revelation.

And we… we were still. For one held breath, we were not visitors to this world, but living, breathing parts of its most profound secret. That is why the wind stopped for us. And we were exactly where the Universe needed us to be.

The shot you see may not be one you may get – disclaimer: this was one of the most incredible clouds and reflections of our career. What I can tell you is whatever’s underneath that water reflecting that crystal-clear, massive color that will always be there. And this, my friends, is where you need to go.

The Lodge at Schroon Lake

Every now and then we find a place we absolutely fall in love with, and this is at the very top of our list for all time best locations.

PHOTOGRAPHING SCHROON LAKE

Whether you’re a professional photographer a casual snapshot taker or just a traveler without a camera, Schroon lake is a must-visit.

WHEN TO GO

  • Optimal Visit: Early-to-mid October, during peak autumn foliage. This is when the maples and birches ignite in gold and crimson, reflecting perfectly across the glass-like surface of the lake.
  • Time of Day to Photograph: Sunrise is essential. The mist rises from the water, and the eastern light catches the western shore. Sunset offers, well just look above at our shot.

PHOTOGRAPHY GEAR TO BRING

  • Camera: Any body with strong dynamic range—the contrast between morning mist, dark water, and bright foliage is where the magic lives.
  • Tripod: Crucial for long-exposure sunrise shots and photographing the stillness of the lake without motion blur.
  • Wide Angle Lens & a Zoom Lens: Use the wide lens (e.g., 16-35mm) for expansive lake reflections and the mountains. Use the zoom (e.g., 70-200mm) to compress the distant Adirondack peaks and isolate mist rising from the water. There was not much wildlife visible on our visit.
  • Polarizing Filter: Essential for cutting glare on the water and deepening the rich autumn colors of the trees.
  • Neutral Density Filter: A ND filter will allow you to smooth out the lake surface into a perfect, mirror-like plane—even after the sun has risen.
  • Extra Batteries and Memory Cards: Cold Adirondack mornings can drain batteries quickly. Bring spares.

WHAT ELSE TO BRING

  • Organic sunscreen
  • Hiking boots
  • Water and Snacks
  • Bug repellent
