Word Manipulation & the Death of the Truth

A philosophical conversation

Today, language itself is being manipulated at an unprecedented level. Words are being twisted, diluted, and repurposed until the truth is buried under layers of emotional language and vague concepts that sound profound, but are designed to confuse, mislead, and soothe the listener into a false sense of security.

Take the word “reality.”

Reality is supposed to be the truth — the actual, factual existence of something.
But today, reality is being used as a subjective tool — “your reality,” “my reality,” as if truth is personal.
When people say, “In my reality…” or “That’s your truth,” they aren’t talking about truth at all. They’re talking about perception, which is not reality.
Perception is a distortion of reality, and the more we confuse the two, the more we lose sight of what is real and what is made up.

THE MANIPULATION OF LANGUAGE IS EVERYWHERE

New Age rhetoric, the self‑help industry, even the political arena — they all thrive on the blurring of lines between truth and opinion. They’re presenting themselves as conveying valid, raw, unaltered facts. However, what we truly need are facts, not emotional catchphrases that sound good but lack meaning.

The world is full of manipulated language.

Words have been hijacked to control thoughts, emotions, and ultimately, actions.
When we lose the precision of language, we lose the ability to discern what is true from what is false.

We have learned that fraud sometimes relies on confusion. When you can confuse someone — when you can cloud their understanding — you can sell them anything. And that’s exactly what’s happening today:

People are being sold falsehoods, not based on evidence, not based on logic, but based on emotional manipulation through words that no longer have precise definitions.

The real danger is this:

When truth becomes relative — when every truth is someone’s truth — we lose the ability to agree on anything real.

CLICHÉS IN PHOTOGRAPHY

What is our responsibility as a voice in this field? We must confront this erosion of language. Through teaching, through inspiration, through championing genuine creativity—yet at every turn, we find ourselves thwarted by algorithmic mediocrity that propagates these empty phrases with relentless efficiency.

CAN YOUR RESIST AND PUT IN EFFORT?

How might we persuade photographers to resist this tide? The poverty of expression evident in some artist statements and captions betrays the very visual eloquence artists strive for in their images. This dissonance—between thoughtful composition and thoughtless description—undermines the integrity of the work.

Some of us here have a very high-intensity, high-output creative mind, and notice everything—everything. As creatives, haven’t some of us always been acutely sensitive to the nuances of language?

THE HALLMARK OF TRUE ARTISTRY

We perceive the world differently. But isn’t this the hallmark of any true artist? Creative vision, by its very nature, requires deviation from conventional perception. The artist’s eye seeks out the anomalies, the overlooked perspectives, the unconventional angles that others pass by.

This explains our visceral reaction when confronted with artistic statements riddled with algorithmic banalities—those hollow phrases like ‘stunning,’ ‘captured,’ ‘through the lens,’ and ‘breathtaking’ that AI systems regurgitate with mechanical precision. Such linguistic poverty provokes in us not merely disappointment but a profound intellectual revulsion.

THE AI TAKE OVER OF THE ARTIST AND THE MIND

Initially, these vapid phrases were merely irritating—a minor nuisance in the linguistic landscape. Now, when encountering them, our composure evaporates entirely. Our editorial process involves Grammarly, which, with algorithmic persistence, transforms our carefully chosen language into those hollow descriptors we refuse to dignify with repetition.

This mechanical homogenization infects every article, permeating the entirety of our work with relentless ubiquity. The cumulative effect is nothing short of maddening. Perhaps this explains our heightened sensitivity—the inevitable consequence of witnessing this linguistic degradation.

IDENTIFYING A.I. WRITING BY THE USE OF THESE WORDS

The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that we can immediately identify artificial intelligence at work by its predictable use of the word “nestled” alongside the other now despised photography phrases that we do not want to mention again. When we encounter such text, we find ourselves drawing one of two conclusions: either the author possesses no creative faculty whatsoever, or they clicked a button, and A.I. wrote the piece, and they did not alter it to make it thier own.

OUR PLEA TO THE ARTIST

Our plea to the artist: We recognize that, as photographers, most of you are not writers. Some among you certainly possess this dual talent, but many do not. Yet we implore you—must you surrender your voice to algorithms that scatter these hollow phrases across your pages?

Could you not pause, even briefly, to infuse your descriptions with the same originality that distinguishes your visual work? Does the art you’ve so meticulously crafted not warrant language created with equal care and intention?

We are updating all of our pages for the year beginning, and while we are doing this, we are scouring for these cliches. We’re not hypocrites. We know they got by us years ago. We’ve been doing this for 15 years, so if you see one, feel free to email us. We may even run a contest. This will have you help us find these words so we can obliterate them.

A COLLECTIVE ECHO

Just look at social media. How many posts of people putting pictures up, and the parroting begins. Where did these people learn that? How did they get trained to do this? Maybe they’re all bots. It could be true.

Like a collective echo, a script everyone follows without really seeing the work. “Stunning” becomes a default response, a way to avoid offering any real thought, a way to avoid engaging. It’s almost as if people are afraid of saying anything that might challenge or complicate the moment. It’s comfortable, but it’s also hollow.

Photography, like any art, deserves more than that. “That word I don’t want to repeat” doesn’t describe the story, the context, or the emotion behind the shot. But the culture of easy praise doesn’t leave much room for real critique or deep engagement. Everyone gets swept up in the tide of positivity, even if it’s empty.

The question becomes: Why is everyone so quick to follow the same script? What’s the cost of that kind of social conformity when it comes to truly appreciating art? It’s like the language has been flattened to avoid discomfort or nuance.

Social media has turned genuine engagement into a parroted performance. It’s not about seeing or understanding anymore—it’s about following a script. With each post, we’re trained to regurgitate the exact hollow phrases, conditioned to hit “like” without thought, and avoid anything that might disrupt the flow of endless approval. It’s brainwashing, plain and simple, turning us into echo chambers where words lose all meaning.

But are we going to be trained to do that in real life? Social media has become a training ground for disengagement, conditioning us to react quickly, without thought or depth. The constant stream of content, the relentless pace, trains us to skim through life, to glance and move on, never really stopping to understand or engage. This carries over into real life, where moments that demand our full attention—conversations, experiences, meaningful encounters—are often brushed aside in favor of distractions and surface-level interactions. It teaches us to look, but not to see. To hear, but not to listen. And in doing so, we lose the ability to connect with the world around us.

IT IS NOT ABOUT COMPLETELY REJECTING A.I. IN WRITING

This isn’t about “rejecting” language or AI—it’s about restoring the precision of language, taking back control over what words are meant to convey. In doing so, you’re not just advocating for more honesty; you’re fighting to preserve the integrity of communication itself.

This is a call for balance. AI can assist, it can amplify, but it cannot replace the heart of human expression. We must not let it dictate the rhythm and flow of our words, the very essence of our ideas.

True understanding comes from engaging with language in a way that reflects what we really mean, not just recycling phrases that sound good. If we rely on these tired words too often, the real substance of communication gets lost in the noise. It’s not that we stop understanding, but the richness of that understanding becomes diluted.

It’s time to take back the words, to shape them with care, and to restore the precision and integrity that communication deserves.

You can completely disagree with any of this. This is just a conversation piece, an invitation to think more deeply about how we communicate and engage with art. But if you’re content with using the words we mentioned and settling for shallow praise, that’s fine. Just know, we won’t be reading it. We are here for something more meaningful.

If you’re going to try to publish something with us, know this: if your submission relies on empty phrases and photography clichés, we will reject it—and ask you to change it. We’re committed to real, meaningful language, and we won’t settle for anything less.

If you need help with your writing, we will offer that to you rather than just rejecting your piece.

Yes, we use grammar tools. We hope everyone does. But when a grammar tool changes our words to those cliché words, we immediately change them back. We contacted Grammarly, and today, they do not have a way to ban those words from our writing. This is probably why the words bother us so much. Almost every sentence is changed to use these now-meaningless parrot words.

Here are some options to replace the parrot words. Of course, there are more. And there are probably many better, but these are just some options.
