After much consideration, we are thrilled to select Ujjwal Datta as the winner of the Milky Way Photographer of the Year 2025 award.

His work embodied the essence of the cosmos in a way that resonated deeply with us. His vision stood out among all submissions. His passion for the craft truly set him apart.

From his Incredible shots arching over ancient landscapes to intimate portraits of distant galaxies, Ujjwal’s Artistry brings the universe closer to home.

Ultimately, it was this combination of passion, dedication, and devotion that stood out for us. Not only did he enter the contest with enthusiasm, but he also reached out ot us directly, showcasing his proactive nature.

The competition presented a landscape of talent. It was Ujjwal’s fervent enthusiasm and passion that shone brightly amidst the sea of contenders. This vibrant spirit was in large part instrumental in guiding our choice.

In his correspondence, he demonstrates both his eagerness to share more of his artistry and a deep commitment to presenting his best works.

FROM THE ARTIST

Ujjwal Datta

My name is Dr. Ujjwal Datta. I am a podiatrist by profession and have had two private practices for the last 25 years, but photography has been my hobby for quite some time. I have always been the photographer for family events and our vacations, as I felt documenting the nostalgia with my art would leave an everlasting memory of any event, whether it be a vacation or a family get-together.

My interest in astrophotography peaked in 2021 after I photographed my first Milky Way in 2019. Then, after I started “practicing” more Milky Way photography, I began to feel connected to the Universe by being under the stars and enjoying the entire process.

Having lost both my parents within a span of four years starting in 2018, astrophotography allowed me to heal. I call it my star therapy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when everything was shut down for a few months, I decided to sharpen my skills in my newfound passion. The passion blossomed further in 2021, and I have not looked back.

I like to travel to various destinations and have taken multiple workshops to craft my passion for astrophotography better.

Managing a busy podiatric practice, working 6 days a week, it feels great to get out under the stars and take the stress off. I also enjoy doing moonscapes and Deep Sky astrophotography when there’s no Milky Way to capture.

I am blessed to have a loving family who supports me in my hobby, and especially my wife, who joins me for almost all my trips and my shoots.
