Massachusetts Photography Hot Spots

    MASSACHUSETTES

Massachusetts has some great photography locations; we plan to get to this state to do much more. We have done a short excursion through this area on a Milky Way photography journey. Massachusettes has some very dark skies that are perfect for Milky Way photography.

Officially, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is the most populous state in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island to the south, New Hampshire and Vermont to the north, and New York to the west. Boston is the capital of Massachusetts and the most populous city in New England. Over 80% of Massachusetts’ population lives in the Greater Boston metro area.

    CAPE COD

Another great Massachusetts photography hotspot is the Cape Cod National Seashore. Stretching nearly 40 miles along the Atlantic coast, its pristine sandy beaches, windswept dunes, and lighthouses create a stunning composition against the ocean’s changing moods. Sunrise and sunset are particularly magical times to capture the light playing on the water’s surface and the silhouettes of the lighthouses. The stark beauty of the Highlands Light in Truro or the charm of Nauset Light near Eastham are favorites amongst photographers.

If you travel inland, the Berkshires offer a veritable feast for the eyes during all four seasons. Rolling hills dotted with quaint farms, meandering streams, and dense forests provide a rich tapestry of potential shots. In the fall, the region is ablaze with foliage that photographers come from miles around to capture. Winter blankets the landscape in serene whites, offering stark contrasts and the challenge of capturing the quiet solitude of snow-covered scenes.

    PURGATORY CHASM STATE RESERVATION, SUTTON

Purgatory Chasm State Reservation, with its dramatic rock formations and steep-walled chasm, is a geological wonder that offers the adventurous photographer a unique opportunity to capture the raw beauty of nature. The chasm, created by glacial meltwater over 14,000 years ago, boasts granite walls that rise to 70 feet, towering over visitors and providing an imposing backdrop for any photograph. The landscape changes with the seasons, from the lush greenery of summer to the fiery foliage of autumn, making it a perfect year-round destination for those seeking to update their portfolios with nature’s varying palette.

    EASTERN POINT LIGHTHOUSE GLOUSTER

This historic beacon is a treasure for maritime enthusiasts and photographers alike. Situated at the entrance of Gloucester Harbor, the Eastern Point Lighthouse provides a picturesque scene, especially during the golden hour when the sun dips low on the horizon and bathes everything in a warm glow. The surrounding rocks, frequented by seabirds and the occasional seal, add an element of life to the tranquil scene. During stormier weather, waves crash against the sturdy structure, allowing photographers to capture the raw power of the sea contrasted with the steadfast nature of the lighthouse. The nearby breakwater offers an additional perspective, leading the eye out to sea.

    MOUNT GREYLOCK

At 3,491 feet, Mount Greylock reigns as the highest point in Massachusetts, boasting breathtaking views that extend over 90 miles on a clear day. It is a haven for hikers and photographers who wish to capture the expansive beauty of the landscape from above. The winding drive up to the summit opens up a panorama encompassing the Berkshire Mountains and far beyond. Standing at the peak, the War Memorial Tower provides a focal point in the landscape, a testament to human endurance mirroring that of the mountain itself. In the early morning light, the horizon can appear to be painted with gentle brushstrokes of

    OLD STURBRIDGE VILLAGE

Old Sturbridge Village – Step back in time as you enter this living history museum, where the past is meticulously preserved and brought to life. Photographers looking to capture the essence of early American life will find no shortage of subjects here. From the rustic farmhouses to the villagers in period attire, every corner of Old Sturbridge Village offers a snapshot of 19th-century New England. As the sun sets, the village’s quaintness is amplified, presenting an ideal setting for golden-hour photography.

    DOANE’S FALLS, ROYALSTON

As one of the hidden gems of Massachusetts, Doane’s Falls offers a serene escape for nature lovers and photographers alike. The cascades along Lawrence Brook provide a dynamic subject, with the rush of water creating a symphony of sound that complements the visual spectacle. Autumn is an incredibly captivating time to visit, as the colors change for a dynamic background.

    DRUMMOND CASTLE, GLOUCESTER

After photographing Motif Number 1 on Bradley Wharf in the harbor town of Rockport, Massachusetts, we traveled to the Drummond castle. Unfortunately, tripods were not allowed inside. This made it difficult to get clear shots as the interior was quite dark in many areas.

There are beautiful gardens outside to photograph, and with the right weather, you can get some dynamic images of this incredible castle.

The Castle Museum welcomes all who seek to photograph its vast array of rooms and exhibits, from the stunning Great Hall to the serene indoor courtyard.
